Pioneering Nigerians Make History in Glasgow

Nigeria's impressive performance at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games yielded a seventh-place finish with a total of 24 medals, consisting of 10 gold, seven silver, and seven bronze medals.

The country's track and field athletes were particularly noteworthy, with several individuals achieving historic milestones, as highlighted by ABIODUN ADEWALE, including Samuel Ogazi, who won the men's 400m gold medal.

Ogazi's victory marked a significant milestone, as he became the first Nigerian man to claim the Commonwealth Games 400m title, achieving a new Games record of 44.25 seconds in the process.

The last time a Nigerian athlete won a medal in the men's 400m at the Commonwealth Games was in 1994, when the late Sunday Bada secured a bronze medal.

Temitope Adeshina also made history, becoming the first Nigerian athlete in 60 years to win a high jump medal, clearing 1.90m to finish third in the women's event.

Adeshina's achievement came after Samuel Igun, who claimed silver in the high jump in Kingston, Jamaica, back in 1966, making her the first Nigerian to match this feat in over six decades.

Ezekiel Nathaniel stormed to gold in the men's 400m hurdles, clocking 48.47 seconds, and in doing so, became the first Nigerian man to win a Commonwealth Games gold medal in the event.

Nathaniel's victory was also notable, as he became the second Nigerian athlete to win a medal in the 400m hurdles in 16 years, following Ajoke Odumosu's bronze medal win at the New Delhi Games in 2010.

Chukwuebuka Enekwechi finally achieved a breakthrough in Glasgow, making history as the first Nigerian to be crowned Commonwealth champion in the men's shot put.

Enekwechi's gold medal win came courtesy of a 21.07m throw in the fifth round, edging out Tom Walsh, who threw 21.03m for silver, and Scott Lincoln, who claimed bronze with 20.99m.

Before Enekwechi's achievement, only Vivian Chukwuemeka had won a medal for Nigeria in the Commonwealth Games shot put, claiming gold in 2002 and silver in 2006.

Ella Onojuvwevwo won bronze in the women's 400m, clocking 51.00 seconds, and in doing so, became the first Nigerian woman to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the event since Fatima Yusuf claimed silver in 1994.

Onojuvwevwo's bronze medal was her first individual senior medal for Nigeria, marking a significant milestone in her career.

Kayinsola Ajayi took bronze in the men's 100m, finishing third behind African champion Emmanuel Eseme of Cameroon and Australia's Lachlan Kennedy in the final.

Ajayi's achievement was all the more notable, given that he broke Fasuba's 20-year-old Nigerian 100m record of 9.85 seconds earlier this year, setting a new national record of 9.84 seconds.

Jessica Orji won silver in the women's shot put, becoming only the second Nigerian woman to win a Commonwealth Games medal in the event, after Vivian Chukwuemeka, who won gold in 2002 and silver in 2006.

Orji's achievement was significant, given that she is still relatively new to representing Nigeria at the senior level.

Udodi Onwuzurike powered to a season's best of 20.09 seconds (+1.7m/s) to win silver in the men's 200m final in Glasgow, finishing behind South Africa's Sinesipho Dambile, who took gold in 19.96 seconds.

Onwuzurike's silver medal was Nigeria's first in the men's 200m at the Commonwealth Games since Daniel Effiong won bronze in 1994.
