Prophet Apata Enoch, a self-acclaimed pastor, has ignited a firestorm on social media with his advice to avoid marrying someone he considers "ugly", while showcasing his own wife in a Facebook post.

Although Enoch did not reveal his church affiliation in the post, an investigation showed that he regularly addresses a congregation and frequently mentions his church in previous social media posts.

On Monday, Enoch took to Facebook to celebrate his wife's upcoming 50th birthday, describing her as beautiful, and wrote, "5th of August, this my baby will be 50 years on earth, many years, my sweetheart."

Enoch, who is 54 years old, also wrote, "I’m 54, my sweetheart 50, Don’t marry an ugly person because of old age, Open your heart and eyes."

The pastor claimed that he had once intended to marry another woman, but was discouraged by what he described as divine guidance, stating, "The woman I wanted to marry before, God told me I wouldn’t like her in her old age."

Enoch further stated, "Today, she looks like someone I can’t take pictures with, I bless God, I hear from this merciful God who knows I like a fine and beautiful wife."

The post has sparked a mix of reactions from Facebook users, with some agreeing with his comments and others criticizing the remarks as insensitive and disparaging.

One user, Dotun Jegede, responded by saying, "Too often, some men of God make emotional posts that create further controversy and bring reproach to the Cross and to the Creator."

Jegede argued that every woman is created in divine beauty and that a post that mocks or reduces a woman is an insult to the Creator, adding, "No woman is ‘ugly’ when she is properly cared for and valued."

Jegede also questioned whether physical beauty is the measure of beauty, citing Scripture teachings in Proverbs that virtue and inner qualities are what truly matter.

The user further asked about women who had injuries and lost their physical beauty, or those who had cancer and had to have their breasts removed to survive, wondering if they should be discarded and rejected.

Jegede called for a balanced Gospel that reflects Christ alone and cares for all humans, regardless of their physical abilities or circumstances.
