Peter Obi Insists He's Not Eager to Occupy the Presidency

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has said he is not desperate to become Nigeria’s president in 2027, insisting that his priority is to see the country work regardless of who leads it.

Obi made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics, where he clarified that his ambition is driven by a desire to transform the country rather than occupy public office.

Responding to a question on whether his mission to “fix Nigeria” meant he would be done with politics if he failed to become president in 2027, Obi said, “That’s not the idea. I’ve always said that I am not desperate to become President of Nigeria. I am desperate to see Nigeria work. If it is working, I will support whatever makes it work.”

The former Labour Party presidential candidate added that he would support anyone capable of moving the country forward.

“So if Nigeria is working, I’ll support whatever makes it work. I want to see a country where a child of nobody can be somebody without knowing anybody, where we can put people out of poverty, where young people will have the opportunity to live, get jobs, be diplomats and participate in what young people do all over the world,” he said.

Obi stressed that Nigeria’s progress mattered more to him than occupying the nation’s highest office.

“It doesn’t matter if Peter Obi is the president or not. So far, Nigeria is good; I’m fine with it,” he said.

When asked whether he would be willing to serve in another capacity, such as a minister, Obi replied, “I don’t even need to hold any office.”

However, he maintained that he was seeking the presidency because he believed he could address the country’s challenges.

“I’m contesting because I believe that I will fix it. I will unite the country and be able to show an example of what is possible,” Obi said.
