PDP’ll unseat APC in Kwara, says gov aspirant

A governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party in Kwara State, Omar Gambari, has expressed optimism about clinching the party’s ticket and ending the dominance of the All Progressives Congress in the state’s 2027 governorship election.

Gambari, who is the son of former Chief of Staff to late President Muhammadu Buhari, Ibrahim Gambari, made his position known on Thursday in Abuja shortly after undergoing the PDP governorship screening exercise.

The screening was held at the party’s national secretariat annex, Legacy House, Maitama, Abuja, as part of early preparations ahead of the 2027 general elections.

He told journalists that the PDP was gaining momentum in Kwara and would stage a major political upset against the ruling APC, insisting that the 2027 contest would be different from previous elections.

According to him, dissatisfaction among residents over economic hardship and governance challenges would play a key role in shifting political power in the state.

“Kwara 2027 will not be business as usual. PDP will spring a surprise that will return power to the people. We will win,” he said.

Gambari also criticised the APC-led administration in Kwara, alleging that residents had been burdened by multiple taxation and worsening living conditions since 2019.

“Since 2019, when the APC government took over in Kwara State, residents have grown tired of excuses. They want results. They want a government that feels their pain. Things are not going the way they should. That must change,” he added.

He maintained that his ambition was rooted in the need to deliver a more responsive and people-centred government that would address economic pressures and social challenges facing citizens.

The aspirant further disclosed that the PDP had intensified mobilisation efforts across the 16 local government areas of the state, noting that the party had become more united and strategically repositioned ahead of 2027.

“The PDP you saw in 2019 and 2023 in Kwara is not the PDP you will see in 2027. We are doing a lot to make the party stronger. We will dislodge the APC and give residents the government they deserve,” he said.

The PDP screening exercise was conducted under the supervision of the party’s National Working Committee as part of its timetable for aspirant selection ahead of the general elections.

The committee handling the governorship screening was chaired by former Kaduna State governor, Ahmed Makarfi, alongside other party officials and stakeholders.

Meanwhile, the PDP has adjusted its timetable for the 2027 nomination process, extending the deadline for the purchase of forms to May 15, while submission of completed forms is now scheduled for May 18.

Screening of aspirants is scheduled for May 19.

The party said the adjustment was made following requests from aspirants and stakeholders across the country as preparations for the next general elections intensify.
