PDP dissolves Kano executive, appoints caretaker

The Peoples Democratic Party has dissolved its State Working Committee in Kano State, paving the way for a caretaker arrangement to oversee the party’s affairs in the state.

The dissolution took effect immediately, according to a letter dated September 24, 2026, signed by the PDP National Organising Secretary, Umar M. Bature, and addressed to the Kano State chairman.

The letter said the decision followed consultations by the national leadership, clarifying that the dissolution affected only the State Working Committee, while the party’s ward and local government executives remained in place.

“The entire PDP State Working Committee (SWC) for Kano State chaired by Dr Bello Gambo Bichi is hereby dissolved with effect from the date of this letter,” the party said.

The North-West Caretaker Committee will henceforth oversee the affairs of the Kano chapter pending the emergence of a new state executive, according to the letter.

Reacting to the development, the dissolved chairman, Bello Gambo Bichi, said he accepted the decision as a sacrifice for the unity and strengthening of the party in Kano.

Bichi said the dissolution formed part of ongoing reconciliation efforts within the party, adding that former governorship candidate, Muhammad Bello Dalhatu, had also stepped aside for Muhammad Sani Abacha.

He explained that the dissolution of the state executive was one of the conditions attached to the reconciliation process, which he said he accepted in the interest of the party.

“We did this in the best interest of the party because we believe that Mohammad Abacha will be a stronger PDP candidate in Kano,” Bichi said.

He added that Dalhatu’s decision to step aside and the dissolution of the state executive were part of efforts to resolve internal disagreements and present a united platform ahead of the 2027 elections.

Bichi said the North-West Caretaker Committee would now coordinate the party’s activities in Kano until a caretaker executive was constituted or a fresh state executive was elected.

The development comes shortly after the PDP replaced Dalhatu with Abacha as its Kano governorship candidate following the withdrawal of the former candidate.

The party had conducted an affirmation and replacement primary in Kano, with Abacha emerging as its new candidate for the 2027 governorship election.
