Pastor Ibiyeomie Cautions Congregation Against Chewing Gum During Services

Pastor David Ibiyeomie, founder and presiding pastor of Salvation Ministries, has sparked a heated online debate after advising his congregation to refrain from chewing gum, drinking water, and using their phones during church services.
nIn a video shared by user #dammiedammie35 on Tuesday, Pastor Ibiyeomie emphasized the importance of maintaining decorum and reverence in the house of God, stating that such behavior is essential for a respectful worship experience.
nAccording to Pastor Ibiyeomie, chewing gum in church is unacceptable, likening it to the behavior of a goat, and instead, advised worshippers to step outside if they need to drink water or engage in other activities that may be distracting.
nHe also pointed out that prominent pastors like Enoch Adeboye and David Oyedepo do not drink water on the altar, describing such actions as indecent and unbefitting of a place of worship.
nPastor Ibiyeomie's remarks have generated a mixed reaction online, with some users agreeing that reverence is essential in church, while others have questioned the practicality of his directives, citing potential health concerns and the need to take notes during services.
nUser #Whyiize1 expressed concerns about the implications of not being able to drink water or use a phone in church, asking what would happen if a member was dehydrated, diabetic, or needed to take notes during the service.
nIn contrast, user #eserosyy supported Pastor Ibiyeomie's position, arguing that people would not engage in such behavior if they were in the presence of a president or governor, and therefore, should show similar reverence in God's presence.
nSalvation Ministries, which is headquartered in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and pastored by Ibiyeomie, is one of Nigeria's prominent churches with a large following.
