Oyo threatens closure of homes, business premises over poor waste disposal

The Oyo State Government has commenced enforcement of its house-to-house waste collection policy, warning residents and business owners that premises without proper waste disposal arrangements risk closure.

The enforcement exercise began on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, with environmental officers of the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources inspecting residential buildings, business premises and other facilities across the state.

The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Hon. Ademola Aderinto, disclosed this during the flag-off of the exercise on Wednesday, saying the enforcement was necessary to ensure compliance with the state’s waste management regulations.

Aderinto said the government was concerned about the environmental, aesthetic, economic and public health consequences of improper waste disposal.

He said the exercise would involve inspecting premises to determine whether occupants had appropriate waste bins and were registered with approved and designated waste consultants assigned to their locations.

“Residents, businesses and other establishments are expected to have proper arrangements for the disposal of their waste,” Aderinto said.

According to him, premises found without the required waste bins or proper waste collection arrangements would be served abatement notices and given 48 hours to comply.

“Buildings found without the required waste bins or proper waste collection arrangements will be served abatement notices and given a 48-hour grace period to comply,” he said.

The commissioner warned that failure to comply within the stipulated period would attract enforcement action, including the closure of defaulting premises.

He said the government would continue the enforcement exercise across the state until the required level of compliance was achieved.

Aderinto urged residents to cooperate with the government by obtaining appropriate waste bins and engaging only approved waste consultants designated to their areas.

He also advised residents to report accredited waste collectors who failed to evacuate waste as required.

“Residents should report any accredited waste collector who fails to evacuate waste as required to the Ministry or the Oyo State Solid Waste Management Authority,” he said.

The commissioner said waste consultants found violating the regulations would face appropriate sanctions, including possible revocation of their operating licences.

He assured residents that the government remained committed to ensuring proper waste management and a cleaner environment across the state.

The enforcement exercise is expected to cover residential buildings, commercial premises and other establishments as the government steps up efforts to improve waste collection and disposal across the state.
