Oyo monarch faults Obas over no-confidence move

The Aseyin of Iseyinland and Chairman of Obas and Chiefs in Oke-Ogun, Oyo State, Oba Sefiu Oyebola, on Thursday dismissed an alleged vote of no confidence passed on him by some monarchs in the region, describing the move as politically motivated.

Oyebola gave the warning in a statement issued in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, following what he described as an “ill-conceived communiqué” reportedly issued after an unofficial meeting of some monarchs in Okeho, headquarters of Kajola Local Government Area.

The monarch said the traditional rulers at the meeting lacked the authority to pass a vote of no confidence on the leadership of the traditional institution in Oke-Ogun.

He said, “The identified monarchs at the meeting do not have the authority to pass a vote of no confidence on the leadership of the traditional institution in Oke-Ogun, especially when their mission is glaringly politically motivated.

“The allegations of maladministration, misconduct and unilateral actions against the personality of Aseyin will be taken further as the Obas who are signatories to such blackmailing should be ready to defend their stand in accordance with the laid down rules and regulations of the Council.

“As a royal father and custodian of the culture and tradition of the people of Iseyinland, I have never been found wanting but continually committed to attracting socio-economic growth and development to the ancient city.”

The monarch said his position often required him to meet influential individuals to facilitate development projects for Iseyinland and the wider Oke-Ogun region.

“Let me warn the traditional rulers in this region against unhealthy use of social media and utterances capable of threatening the existing peace and unity in the region.

“I will equally advise the concerned Obas to be careful in their pursuit of selfish interests and egocentric mission. I am aware many of you travelled at will to any part of the country and even outside, mostly on matters personal to you and in the interest of your respective communities, hence you should never expect me to consult unauthorised person(s) before making efforts aimed at making lives better for my people and generality of people in Oke-Ogun,” he added.

He also refuted allegations that he unilaterally postponed a scheduled meeting of the council, explaining that the decision was collectively taken by executive members to enable attendance at an empowerment programme organised by Senator Fatai Buhari in Ogbomoso.
