Osun Speaker Urges Inspector General to Investigate Viral Video Threat

The Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, has called on the Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, to investigate an alleged threat to his life following a disturbing incident involving the Executive Chairman of Odo Otin Local Government, Adewale Adeyinka, in Okuku.

Egbedun made the call in a statement released on Wednesday while giving an account of what he said he personally witnessed after Adeyinka allegedly came under pursuit by a three-vehicle convoy.

The Speaker, in the statement he also shared across his social media handles, said he received a distress call from the council chairman while returning from the Osun State House of Assembly after a World Press Conference.

“He informed me that he was being pursued by a three-vehicle convoy,” Egbedun said.

He said he immediately directed Adeyinka to return to the Okuku Divisional Police Station, which he described as the safest place for the chairman to seek protection.

n

“I thereafter proceeded towards Okuku with my convoy and security personnel. By the time we arrived, the Chairman had gained entry into the police station,” he said.

Egbedun said he was unaware of events outside the station until he arrived and was informed that two men had reportedly been apprehended by members of the public and that a firearm had allegedly been recovered from them.

“Concerned that the situation could degenerate into mob action, I immediately instructed my Chief Detail to take the two men away from the crowd and place them in official custody,” he said.

He added that he subsequently directed that the suspects be taken to Osogbo and handed over to the Department of State Services alongside the firearm reportedly recovered from them.

“The suspects have since been handed over to the appropriate security authorities. It is now the responsibility of the relevant agencies to establish the facts surrounding the incident,” the Speaker said.

Egbedun called for a “thorough, impartial and professional investigation” into the incident.

He said the investigation should establish the identities of those apprehended, the circumstances surrounding the firearm and ammunition reportedly recovered, the ownership and purpose of the vehicles allegedly involved in the pursuit, and the events that led to the reported confrontation.

The Speaker also rejected what he described as “false and misleading” narratives being circulated on social media by some APC supporters in Odo Otin.

“I will not be drawn into the false narratives and deliberate misinformation being circulated by desperate political actors seeking to distort what actually transpired,” he said.

Egbedun further linked the incident to what he described as a viral threat video against him and other members of his party, urging the Inspector-General of Police to investigate the matter.

“This incident once again reinforces the urgent need for the Inspector General of Police to investigate the viral threat video against me and other members of my party,” he said.

He said political differences should not lead to violence, intimidation or threats against lives.

“Political differences must never become a justification for violence, intimidation, threats or attempts to endanger human lives,” Egbedun said.

The Speaker added that he remained committed to “the protection of lives, the rule of law, democratic values and the peaceful development” of Osun State.

“I will not be intimidated by threats, intimidation or acts of violence. I will continue to stand for peace, justice and the democratic rights of our people,” he said.

Egbedun urged political actors in the state to resolve disagreements through dialogue, democratic participation and elections rather than intimidation or violence.

The Speaker, earlier on Wednesday said his lawyers had submitted a petition to the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, on the alleged threat issued against him by the All Progressives Congress House of Representatives candidate for Ifelodun/ Boripe/Odo Otin Federal Constituency in the 2027 election, Francis Eniade.n
