Osun election: Police detain 295 individuals in connection with alleged offenses

A total of 295 suspects were taken into custody by the police in connection with various incidents that occurred during the Osun State governorship election on Saturday, marking a significant effort to maintain law and order. This move was part of a broader strategy to prevent electoral malpractices and ensure a peaceful conduct of the election.

The police subsequently released 293 of these suspects on bail after conducting a thorough screening process, while the remaining two suspects were retained in custody for further investigation and potential prosecution. The decision to release the majority of suspects was made following a meticulous review of the evidence against them.

The heightened surveillance and enforcement measures implemented by security agencies during the election aimed to prevent a range of electoral offences, including violence and vote-buying, and to ensure the integrity of the electoral process. These measures were designed to deter potential troublemakers and respond swiftly to emerging threats.

Force spokesman Ani Iniedu confirmed in an interview that two suspects were still being held in custody and would undergo further investigation before facing prosecution for the alleged offences. He emphasized that the police had arrested 295 suspects during the election and released 293 on bail after screening, resulting in two suspects remaining in custody for prosecution.

The arrests made by the police were a key component of the comprehensive security strategy deployed across the state to guarantee a peaceful and credible election. In contrast, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps reported that it had made no arrests during the election, despite playing a crucial role in maintaining security and order. The Corps had established a robust security framework across local government areas and wards to deter potential troublemakers and respond rapidly to emerging threats.

According to Afolabi Babawale, spokesman for the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, the organization had deployed a multi-layered security architecture comprising both armed and unarmed personnel to safeguard polling units and electoral materials. This approach was designed to provide a visible deterrent to potential troublemakers and ensure the secure conduct of the election.

The Corps had stationed three fully armed patrol teams, equipped with Hilux vehicles, in every local government area to maintain a visible presence and respond to major incidents. This deployment was supplemented by the assignment of unarmed personnel to polling centres to maintain order and monitor activities on-site.

In addition, two armed personnel were positioned 500 metres away from each polling centre, resulting in a total of five officers assigned to cover each polling unit and provide an additional layer of security. This strategic deployment was intended to ensure the secure and peaceful conduct of the election.
