Organization calls for safeguarding of Nigerian citizens in South Africa

FILE: The Nigerian Citizens Association South Africa has urged the High-Commissioner-designate to South Africa, Femi Fani-Kayode, to prioritise the welfare and protection of Nigerians in the country.

The apex body representing Nigerians in South Africa said Fani-Kayode’s appointment came at a critical time when proactive and compassionate leadership was needed to strengthen Nigeria-South Africa relations and address challenges confronting Nigerian nationals.

The President of the association, Frank Onyekwelu, said in a statement obtained by Diaspora Tales on Friday, that the former minister’s political experience, diplomatic exposure and knowledge of international affairs would advance the interests of Nigerians in South Africa.

He also assured cooperation with Fani-Kayode’s office, saying his leadership should provide renewed hope and stronger institutional collaboration while promoting the unity, security, dignity and peaceful coexistence of Nigerians in South Africa.

The association commended the Consul General of Nigeria in Johannesburg, Amb. Ninikanwa Okey-Uche, for her efforts in engaging and supporting the Nigerian community.

NICASA said it was particularly concerned about social, economic and security challenges facing Nigerians, including growing concerns over issues affecting foreign nationals in parts of South Africa.

The statement partly read, “We firmly believe that the synergy between your esteemed office and the Consulate will further consolidate the progress already being made and open new opportunities for effective community engagement, consular support, and diplomatic intervention where necessary.

“As the recognised apex body of Nigerians in South Africa, NICASA eagerly looks forward to welcoming you to our country of residence and to working closely with your good office in promoting unity, peace, security, development, and the overall well-being of Nigerians across South Africa.
