Udodi Onwuzurike clinched silver in the men’s 200m final at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on Friday night, producing a season’s best of 20.09 seconds (+1.7) at Scotstoun Stadium to add another medal to Team Nigeria’s tally.

The 23-year-old, running from lane eight, finished behind South Africa’s Sinesipho Dambile, who took gold in 19.96 seconds, while Jamaica’s Christopher Taylor claimed bronze in 20.11 seconds after a close finish.

The silver represents a significant breakthrough for Onwuzurike, who first announced himself in 2021 when he became the first Nigerian man to win the 200m at the World Athletics Under-20 Championships in Nairobi.

Injuries and stiff competition delayed his breakthrough on the senior stage, but the Commonwealth Games podium now stands as the biggest senior championship medal of his career, confirming his transition from youth sensation to world-class performer.

Facing a field that included Olympic finalists and seasoned Commonwealth medallists, Onwuzurike ran with confidence from the curve and held his composure down the home straight to secure Nigeria’s sixth silver medal of the Games.

The result continues a resurgence that has seen him lower his personal best to 19.76 seconds and compete at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, establishing himself as one of Africa’s fastest men.
