One killed, another injured as youths clash in Jigawa

Tragedy struck in Rahamanu Village under Aujara District, Jahun Local Government Area of Jigawa State, as one person was killed and another seriously injured following a bloody clash between youths late on Wednesday night.

Eyewitnesses told our correspondent that the fight threw the entire Fulani settlement into confusion and panic, with residents rushing to the scene after hearing shouting from the centre of the village.

One of the residents, Audu Falalu, who spoke via telephone interview, described the scene.

“We were at home around 11pm when we heard shouting from the centre of the village. When we rushed there, we saw some youths fighting seriously. Two of them were already bleeding,” he said.

Another resident, Haruna Adamu, said the community quickly alerted security operatives to prevent further bloodshed.

“The fight was very serious. We immediately called the NSCDC people in Aujara because we were afraid that more people would be killed. They came quickly,” he said.

Adamu added that the injured victims were rushed to the health centre by security personnel and good Samaritans.

Confirming the incident on Thursday night and giving further details on Friday, the Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Jigawa State Command, ASC Badaruddeen Tijjani, said the command received a distress call over the clash.

“On Wednesday, 23rd September 2026, at about 2330 hours, the NSCDC Aujara Divisional Office received a distress call from a member of the Fulani community reporting that some youths had engaged in a serious fight at Rahamanu Village, under Aujara District, Jahun Local Government Area,” he said.

Tijjani said personnel were immediately mobilised to the area upon receipt of the distress call.

“Two persons were found to have sustained serious injuries during the fight and were subsequently taken to the Primary Health Centre, Aujara, for medical attention,” he stated.

He disclosed that one of the victims did not survive.

“One of the victims, Umar Abdullahi, aged 20, of Rahamanu Fulani Settlement, unfortunately died while on admission at the health facility.

“The second victim, Sule Adamu, aged 19, of the same address, is currently responding to treatment,” Tijjani said.

On the investigation, Tijjani said, “Preliminary investigation into the incident has commenced to establish the circumstances surrounding the fight and identify all persons involved.”

He further revealed that two suspects had been arrested in connection with the clash, saying, “Two suspects were arrested by Police personnel attached to Aujara Division in connection with the incident for further investigation and possible prosecution.”

The NSCDC spokesman assured that the command would keep the public informed as the investigation progresses, adding, “Further developments will be communicated as the investigation progresses.”

The cause of the clash had not been officially established as of the time of filing this report.

Violent clashes among youths in rural settlements across northern Nigeria have become an increasingly worrying phenomenon, fuelled by a combination of unemployment, substance abuse, access to dangerous weapons and the breakdown of traditional conflict resolution mechanisms in some communities.

Jigawa State, located in the North-West geopolitical zone, has a predominantly rural population with a significant proportion of Fulani herdsmen and agrarian communities. While the state has been relatively peaceful compared to some of its neighbours, incidents of youth violence and community clashes have occasionally disrupted its generally tranquil social fabric.
