Ondo state government agency disburses N400m in aid to survivors of violent incident

The Ondo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission has initiated a relief effort, providing essential items to communities in Ilaje Local Government Area, following an alleged incident involving naval personnel.

This incident occurred in October of the previous year, when Nigerian Navy personnel allegedly invaded the communities of Obejedo, Obe-Adun, and Obe-Nla, resulting in the destruction of properties valued at millions of naira.

Subsequently, residents of the affected communities submitted a petition to the Nigerian Police and other relevant stakeholders, seeking an investigation into the incident and highlighting the displacement of many residents.

During the distribution of relief materials at Igbokoda, the headquarters of Ilaje LGA, on Saturday, the Executive Chairman of OSOPADEC, Biyi Poroye, explained that the commission's actions were taken in response to a directive from the governor, following a visit to the affected communities and the submission of recommendations.

According to Poroye, the relief materials, which included items such as mattresses, foodstuffs, washing machines, and household materials, were valued at N400m.

The purpose of the relief effort, as stated by Poroye, was to alleviate the suffering of those affected by the misunderstanding between Ilaje communities and naval military officers, and to provide tangible support to the affected individuals.

Poroye emphasized that the governor had approved a sum of N400 million for the relief effort, which was spent judiciously on various interventions, including the construction and repair of damaged buildings.

The governor's approval, as noted by Poroye, was for a specific amount, and it was essential to provide tangible evidence of the expenditures, rather than simply distributing funds.

Poroye also highlighted the commission's other accomplishments, including the completion of seven jetties in various communities since he took office.

The commission, under Poroye's leadership, has also given attention to abandoned and ongoing projects, including the rehabilitation of the Agadagba hospital, which had been neglected for 16 years, and the renovation of several schools in Ilaje.

In his remarks, the Chairman of the OSOPADEC Palliative Committee, Dr Ola Judah, described the relief effort as a deliberate and impactful initiative.

Dr Judah revealed that the committee had facilitated the construction of 12 12-bedroom houses and the rehabilitation of an additional 14 houses, among other efforts.

According to Dr Judah, the purpose of the intervention was to restore stability and improve living conditions for affected families, and to stimulate local economic recovery through the provision of resources such as Yamaha outboard engines, fishing boats, and a modern bakery.
