Okonkwo open to Wrexham stay

Super Eagles goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo appears increasingly open to extending his stay at Wrexham, despite growing speculation over his long-term future at the club ahead of the summer transfer window, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

The 24-year-old is contracted to the Dragons until the end of the 2026/27 season, but no agreement has yet been reached over an extension, raising the possibility that he could leave if talks fail to progress.

Okonkwo began his career at Arsenal but struggled for first-team opportunities due to strong competition, eventually joining Wrexham on loan during the 2023/24 season before the Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney-owned club made the move permanent the following summer. He has since developed into one of the side’s standout performers.

Former Premier League champions Leicester City are reportedly among the clubs monitoring his situation, but Okonkwo insisted his focus remains on helping Wrexham push for promotion to the Premier League after the club narrowly missed out on the playoffs last season.

Wrexham have enjoyed a remarkable rise in recent years, becoming the first club in English football history to secure three consecutive promotions, from the National League to the Championship. However, they finished seventh last season, missing the playoffs by just two points.

“I don’t think it was a sad ending. I think, obviously, we were close. So, you know, it hurts a little, but we did really well this season. The next thing is to push for promotion next season. That’s been the idea since I’ve been there, so I don’t see any change for next season,” Okonkwo said.

He added that his focus would remain on consistent performances for both club and country saying, “Just to play as many games as possible and help whoever, Nigeria, Wrexham, or whoever I’m with, win as many games as possible.”

Okonkwo’s rise at Wrexham has also earned him international recognition after switching allegiance from England to Nigeria. He made his Super Eagles debut in a 2-0 win over Zimbabwe at the Unity Cup and kept another clean sheet in the final as Nigeria beat Jamaica 3-0 to lift the trophy.

Although no new deal has yet been agreed, his recent comments point to a strong commitment to Wrexham’s promotion ambitions, a development that would represent a significant blow to Leicester City’s interest in the goalkeeper.
