Okonjo-Iweala praises outstanding performance of African squads in the World Cup

Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, the Director-General of the World Trade Organisation, has commended the African teams participating in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, acknowledging their determination and hoping for continued success in the tournament.

On Sunday, Okonjo-Iweala took to her verified X account to express admiration for Morocco and Egypt, which have advanced to the next stage, as well as Cape Verde, which she regarded as the most impressive African team in the competition so far.

Okonjo-Iweala's post read: "So proud of the performance of the African teams at the World Cup! Morocco and Egypt have made it through so far, but Cape Verde was a standout,” highlighting the notable achievements of these teams.

In addition to praising the successful teams, Okonjo-Iweala also recognized the efforts of DR Congo, Côte d’Ivoire, and Ghana, which were eliminated from the competition, stating that they demonstrated bravery throughout the tournament.

Her post continued: "DRC, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana also battled. Thanks to all for making us proud. Keeping fingers crossed on further progress!” as she showed appreciation for their participation.

Okonjo-Iweala further expressed her enthusiasm for Nigeria's potential qualification for the next FIFA World Cup, stating that it would be thrilling to see the Super Eagles return to the global football stage.

Regarding Nigeria's prospects, she wrote: "Would be exciting if Nigeria makes it through to the next World Cup,” conveying her optimism about the team's future in the tournament.
