Ogunshola Warriors successfully defend their PUNCH Summer Week soccer championship with a narrow 5-4 victory in a penalty kick showdown

Ogunshola Warriors have successfully defended their PUNCH Summer Week football title, outlasting Aboderin Blazers 5-4 in a penalty shootout after the two teams were deadlocked in a thrilling final in Magboro, Ogun State on Friday.

Their path to victory was not straightforward, as the defending champions were forced to come from behind and ultimately prevail in the tense shootout, capping off an impressive campaign.

In the semi-finals, Ogunshola Warriors had stormed into the final with a commanding 10-2 win over Emuwa Eagles, while Aboderin Blazers edged out Adeyeye Titans 4-3 on penalties following a dramatic 3-3 draw.

The defending champions' title retention was all the more impressive given that they overcame an early two-goal deficit, ultimately securing victory in a dramatic shootout to claim back-to-back titles.

Aboderin Blazers made a strong start, with Kehinde Fawzi opening the scoring, and Okamgba Justice doubling their advantage with a spectacular strike from his own half.

The Ogunshola Warriors quickly responded, however, with Ekugbe Gilbert pulling one back to make it 2-1, and Adekunle Sulaiman then levelling the scores at 2-2 with a well-taken volley.

Ojo briefly put Aboderin back in front, making it 3-2, but the Warriors' persistence paid off as they levelled the scores once more, with Gilbert scoring his second goal of the match to make it 3-3.

Neither side could find a winning goal in the remainder of regulation time, sending the final to a penalty shootout, where the Warriors' composure ultimately told.

Ekugbe Gilbert converted Ogunshola Warriors' first penalty, and while Justice Okamgba replied for Aboderin, Sulaiman scored the Warriors' second penalty after being asked to retake his initial successful effort.

The shootout seesawed back and forth, with Tosin missing for the Ogunshola Warriors, and Ojo's penalty being saved, before Ayomide converted for the champions.

Isaac then restored parity for Aboderin, but the Warriors ultimately emerged victorious, winning the shootout 5-4 to claim their second consecutive PUNCH Summer Week title.

The result meant that Aboderin Blazers finished runners-up, after a spirited campaign that ultimately fell just short.

In the third-place playoff, Adeyeye Titans beat Emuwa Eagles 8-3 to claim the consolation prize.
