Obidient movement rejects rival factions, cautions against takeover attempts

The Obidient Movement issued a statement on Thursday, disavowing any connection to unauthorised groups and individuals that claim to be operating in its name, citing concerns over parallel structures and potential confusion among its members and the general public.

According to the statement, signed by National Coordinator Dr Yunusa Tanko, the movement has been made aware of certain individuals and groups attempting to create confusion around its identity, leadership, and direction, and is taking steps to clarify its position and establish a clear line of authority.

Dr Tanko emphasised that the Obidient Movement only recognises its established structure, which is aligned with the presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, and does not acknowledge any faction or alternative leadership outside of this framework.

The movement's leadership stated that it will not be distracted from its mission by attempts to create confusion or misrepresent its identity, and will continue to engage with Nigerians across all levels, focusing on promoting its core values and ideals.

Dr Tanko cautioned the public, media organisations, and supporters against associating with any group operating under names or structures that are similar to, but not officially recognised by, the Obidient Movement.

Such groups, according to the movement, do not represent its values, identity, or leadership, and should not be considered as authentic or legitimate representatives of the Obidient Movement.

The movement's statement advised the public, media organisations, and all stakeholders to be aware that any group operating under a name or identity that is similar to, but not officially recognised by, the Obidient Movement does not represent the movement or its leadership.

The Obidient Movement emerged as a significant political force during the 2023 general election, mobilising millions of young Nigerians and supporters around Peter Obi's presidential ambition, and has since become a major player in the country's political landscape.

The movement reaffirmed its commitment to its core ideals, including promoting integrity, accountability, and justice, as it pursues its vision of a "New Nigeria", and urged its supporters to remain united and focused on the movement's goals.

The Obidient Movement also encouraged its supporters to rely only on officially recognised communication channels for information concerning its activities, in order to ensure that they receive accurate and reliable information about the movement's plans and initiatives.
