Obi Cubana Insists His Foray Into Politics Isn't Driven By Self-Interest

Obinna Iyiegbu, better known as Obi Cubana, has shed light on his growing involvement in politics, asserting that it is not driven by personal interests or ambition, but rather a desire to foster meaningful engagement and inclusive governance in Nigeria.

As a supporter of President Bola Tinubu, Obi Cubana's participation in politics is geared towards bridging the gap between the government and citizens, particularly among young people and across diverse regions, according to a statement he issued on Monday.

Obi Cubana emphasized that his career has been built through hard work, entrepreneurship, and strategic investments, and that he has never held public office nor benefited from government patronage, with his involvement in politics being purely driven by a desire to create platforms for meaningful engagement.

He noted that his recent exposure to political processes has revealed a disconnect between government policies and citizens' expectations, even when such policies are well-intentioned, with the gap between government and the people being reflected in overwhelming public opinion.

Obi Cubana observed that many policies, though designed with good intentions, fail to make a tangible impact on citizens, either because they are not communicated effectively or implemented with a full understanding of citizens' expectations, which he believes is a significant issue that needs to be addressed.

He called for deliberate efforts by government at all levels to strengthen transparency, accountability, and empathy, stressing that trust remains the foundation of any functional democracy, and that it is unfortunate when citizens lose trust in their government.

Obi Cubana emphasized that rebuilding trust must be a continuous and intentional effort, and that the people ultimately hold the power in a democracy, and their voices must be respected and reflected in governance, which is essential for a functioning democracy.

He also addressed recent criticisms surrounding his public comments, dismissing claims of anti-Igbo sentiment and describing such narratives as divisive, stating that he has never, and will never, subscribe to any narrative that undermines the intelligence, unity, or contribution of the Igbo people or any ethnic group in Nigeria.

Obi Cubana advocated a holistic approach to governance, urging coordination across local, state, and federal levels to ensure meaningful development, and that development cannot be centralized, it must be coordinated across all tiers to truly impact the lives of the people.

He explained that the City Boy Movement is focused on encouraging inclusive political participation, especially among youths and the private sector, and that it represents an opportunity to redefine civic engagement, creating space for constructive dialogue.

Obi Cubana cautioned against framing political participation along ethnic lines, urging Nigerians to prioritize ideas and policies that promote unity and national development, and that reducing any political movement to ethnic sentiments diminishes the essence of democracy.
