The Super Eagles are set to reconvene for the first time since their bronze win at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, with the focus now on the goalkeeping department, where Stanley Nwabali's absence has reopened the competition, giving Maduka Okoye a chance to reclaim the number one spot.

Stanley Nwabali’s absence is not due to injury, but rather circumstance, as he is currently without a club after leaving Chippa United in February 2026, having terminated his contract with six months remaining in a calculated gamble to secure a higher-profile move.

Nwabali explained his situation, saying “There is no contract in front, there is no club in front, and I am not guaranteeing you that a club will come today or tomorrow, I am not desperate to get a club, but whatever club that comes, if it suits my agent and it suits me, I am going to play,” in an interview with South Africa radio host Andile Nchube.

Former internationals, including Garba Lawal, have criticized Nwabali's decision, with Lawal warning that it could derail his progress, saying “I wonder what he was thinking when he requested to cancel his contract while having no offers on the table, the transfer window has closed everywhere, I believe he should have waited and seen out his contract, especially since he only has six months left.”

Former goalkeeper Emmanuel Babayaro also expressed concerns, saying “I’m still baffled by the decision, he should have stayed while planning a proper exit, he needs to be surrounded by proper advisors,” highlighting the risks of Nwabali's gamble.

The significance of Nwabali’s absence to the Super Eagles is best understood through his achievements, including eight clean sheets between the 2023 and 2025 Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, placing him within two of Vincent Enyeama’s all-time national record of 10.

Then coach Jose Peseiro identified Nwabali as that profile, and his subsequent performances validated the decision, however, football's cyclical nature has once again reset the equation, with Nwabali currently inactive at the club level, and attention shifting to Okoye.

Okoye's statistical output this season in Serie A suggests a goalkeeper in recovery and progression, with 60 saves, a save percentage of 69.8 per cent, and 26 goals conceded, while his goals prevented metric stands at 3.66, indicating that he has saved more goals than an average goalkeeper would be expected to in similar situations.

Okoye has also recorded six clean sheets, reflecting improved defensive coordination for a Udinese in midtable, while a penalty save rate of 16.7 per cent, with one successful stop from six faced, adds marginal value in high-pressure scenarios, and his possession statistics indicate a goalkeeper comfortable in build-up phases.
