NPFL threatens points deduction over fixture violations

The Nigeria Premier Football League has warned clubs against violating fixture directives for the final two matchdays of the 2025/26 season, stressing that any breach could attract severe sanctions, including points and goals deductions, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

With matchday 37 and 38 expected to determine the title race, continental qualification spots and relegation battle, the league body insisted that all fixtures must be played simultaneously to preserve sporting integrity and fairness across the competition.

In a directive issued by NPFL Chief Operating Officer Davidson Owumi, clubs were reminded that all remaining matches had been fixed for the same date and kick-off time.

“It has also become imperative to remind all clubs that the remaining games of Matchday 37 and 38 have been scheduled to be played simultaneously on the same date and kick-off time of 4pm,” Owumi stated.

“This decision is to ensure sporting fairness and to protect the integrity of our matches and results.”

The league body further instructed clubs not to request changes to dates or kick-off times, even in cases where their regular home grounds may be unavailable.

According to the directive, any club unable to use its approved home venue must communicate an alternative NPFL-accredited ground to the league before the stipulated deadline.

“Should any club have issues of unavailability of regular venue, such club must choose and communicate an alternative NPFL accredited venue before close of business on May 7, 2026,” the memo added.

“Should any club fail to do so, the NPFL will choose a venue for the fixture.”

The NPFL also invoked its regulations to warn that any club found guilty of breaching the directive risks forfeiting three points and three goals.

Sunday’s matchday 37 fixtures, all scheduled for simultaneous kick-off, will see Abia Warriors host Kun Khalifa, while El Kanemi Warriors face Niger Tornadoes.

Kano Pillars will take on Warri Wolves as Katsina United host Ikorodu City. Elsewhere, Kwara United welcome Enyimba, Nasarawa United meet Plateau United, while Enugu Rangers play Bendel Insurance.

Defending champions Remo Stars will battle relegation rivals Bayelsa United in Ikenne, Shooting Stars host Barau, while Wikki Tourists entertain Rivers United.

All matches are scheduled to kick off simultaneously at 4pm as the season heads into a dramatic conclusion.
