Nonprofit organization initiates therapy for 73 youngsters

Seventy three children born with clubfoot have commenced corrective treatment across 24 specialised clinics operating in 12 Nigerian states under the intervention programme of the Straight Child Foundation.

Speaking during a media briefing in Umuahia on Monday, the Foundation’s Cast Coordinator, Uchenna Egbe-Eni, revealed that about 90.9 per cent of children enrolled had already undergone tenotomy in line with internationally approved treatment standards for clubfoot correction.

He disclosed that more than 74.7 per cent of the newly enrolled children were below 12 months old, a critical age bracket considered globally as the most effective period for early intervention and successful correction of the condition.

The treatment programme, coordinated through partner health institutions, maintained an average of 4.1 casting visits per child before tenotomy procedures were carried out.

He said, “Supportive supervisory visits, data quality assessments and specialised trainings were conducted at major partner medical facilities including the University of Nigeria, Nsukka medical centre, Enugu State ,Federal Teaching Hospital, Owerri in Imo State and Rhema University Teaching Hospital, Aba, Abia State to ensure strict adherence to global treatment protocols and effective patient data management.
