Nigeria's security agency apprehends pair accused of destroying rail and cable infrastructure in Kano

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Kano State Command, has apprehended two individuals suspected of vandalism during separate operations conducted in Kumbotso and Nassarawa Local Government Areas.

State Commandant Mohammed Agalama verified the arrests during a press briefing at the command headquarters in Kano on Monday, explaining that the suspects were taken into custody following intelligence-led operations.

The command's success in these operations is a direct result of its persistent efforts to safeguard Critical National Assets and Infrastructure across all 44 local government areas in the state, according to Agalama.

The suspects have been identified as 22-year-old Gath Gamaliel from Zango, Kaduna State, and 31-year-old Salisu Jibrin, a resident of Kurna in Dala Local Government Area of Kano State.

Gath Gamaliel was found to be in possession of 17 vandalised railway clips at Panshekara, whereas Salisu Jibrin, a suspected receiver of stolen goods, was caught at Yankaba as he attempted to collect roughly 60 kilograms of suspected vandalised copper wire.

Commandant Agalama stated that the recovered items are believed to have been removed from public infrastructure without authorisation, highlighting the severity of the crime.

The arrests underscore the command's dedication to combating vandalism and other economic crimes that pose a threat to national development, Agalama noted.

Investigations are currently underway to identify other members of the suspected criminal syndicates, after which the apprehended individuals will be prosecuted in court, according to Agalama.
