Nigeria’s first science museum to open May 21 in Abuja

The Nigerian Academy of Science will on May 21 open Nigeria’s first dedicated science museum to the public.

The NAS–T.Y. Danjuma Museum and Library, located in Abuja, was funded and commissioned in 2025 by retired General Theophilus Danjuma.

According to a press release signed by the President of NAS, Professor Abubakar Sambo and the Public Affairs Secretary of NAS, Professor Chinedum Babalola, on Friday, the facility would provide a dynamic space for interactive exhibitions, scientific learning, and access to a wide range of educational resources.

“The museum and library is expected to serve students, researchers, educators, and the public by fostering curiosity, innovation, and a deeper appreciation for science and its role in national development,” the statement read.

It added that bookings would be open for school visits, organised group tours, and exhibitions, creating opportunities for hands-on learning and collaboration.

On curriculum impact, the statement noted that the facility would play a key role in strengthening Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics education in Nigeria.

“While there are permanent exhibits, there will also be specialised themed exhibitions organised on a regular basis,” the statement read.

The statement also noted that the academy was open to partnerships with corporate organisations, development agencies, and other stakeholders interested in supporting the museum’s growth and sustainability.

As part of the opening programme, a public lecture titled “Redefining Cancer Care in the Era of Immunotherapy and Precision Oncology: Implications for Research, Treatment, and Policy in Nigeria” will be delivered by the Director of the University of Chicago Medicine Comprehensive Cancer Centre, Professor Kunle Odunsi.

Seven distinguished individuals will also be inducted as Fellows of the Nigerian Academy of Science at the event.
