Nigerians can expect improved power distribution in as little as 14 days, according to a spokesperson for Adelabu.

Adebayo Olowoniyi, Chief Technical Adviser to the Minister of Power, has announced that Nigerians can expect a gradual improvement in electricity supply as maintenance work on a major gas pipeline nears completion, with full restoration anticipated within two weeks.

This statement was made by Olowoniyi on Thursday during an appearance on Arise TV, following a public apology issued by Minister Adebayo Adelabu over the persistent power outages that have exacerbated hardship across various sectors in recent weeks.

Olowoniyi defended the minister's apology, stating that it demonstrates strong leadership rather than an admission of personal culpability, and emphasized that the minister's decision to take ownership of the issue was a crucial step towards finding a solution.

According to Olowoniyi, the current crisis is largely driven by disruptions to a key gas pipeline that supplies fuel to power plants, with approximately 75 per cent of Nigeria's electricity generation being gas-dependent.

Olowoniyi explained that the maintenance work on the major gas pipeline is nearing completion, and full gas pressure is expected to be restored within the next two weeks, enabling power plants to generate electricity at their previous levels.

He expressed confidence that the recovery process has already begun, with improvements expected to be gradual but steady, and noted that some improvement would be visible from the previous day as pressure on the pipeline gradually builds up.

The development follows Minister Adelabu's public apology on Tuesday in Abuja, where he attributed the outages to factors beyond the government's immediate control and provided a two-week timeline for recovery.

Adelabu had stated that with the commitments from gas suppliers and the timeline for repair of the gas pipelines, improvements in supply would be visible within two weeks, and reiterated the Federal Government's target of generating 6,000 megawatts of electricity before the end of 2026.

Nigeria's power sector has long struggled with a combination of inadequate gas supply, ageing infrastructure, transmission bottlenecks, and persistent liquidity challenges across the value chain.
