Nigerian university pupil succumbs to fatal injuries following leap from high-rise apartment block

The Lagos State Police Command has verified the tragic demise of Faith Alayande, a 23-year-old Nigerian Law School student, who allegedly leapt to her death from the rooftop of a four-storey hostel building within the institution's Victoria Island campus in Lagos.

According to Abimbola Adebisi, the command's Public Relations Officer, the incident was reported to the authorities after Alayande was discovered unresponsive on the hostel premises on Friday, following which the police were notified.

Adebisi revealed that the institution's matron had alerted the police, stating that another student and a relative had stumbled upon a suicide note penned by Alayande, prompting them to initiate a search for her, but unfortunately, she had already jumped from the rooftop before they could locate her.

The police spokesperson confirmed the incident, explaining that Alayande had written a suicide note, and before her hostel mate and a relative could find her, she had taken the fatal leap from the four-storey building, with her body subsequently being transported to a morgue for preservation.

Security analyst Zagazola Makama shared details of the incident on X, disclosing that Alayande's lifeless body was discovered within the hostel premises on Friday by a fellow student, who promptly alerted the matron.

As per Makama, the Chief Matron of the Law School, Mrs Igbokwe Juliana, reported the incident to the Victoria Island Police Division at approximately 6:30am, following which she proceeded to the scene, where Alayande's body was found lying on the ground.

Makama noted that preliminary observations suggested Alayande may have jumped from the rooftop of the four-storey hostel building, resulting in her untimely death in the early hours of Friday, August 7, 2026.

The incident was reported by the Chief Matron, Mrs Igbokwe Juliana, at about 6:30am, with the police subsequently launching an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Alayande's death.

The PPRO, Abimbola Adebisi, concluded that an investigation was ongoing into the incident, aiming to unravel the events leading up to Alayande's tragic demise.

This unfortunate incident marks the second reported case of a Nigerian Law School student dying by suicide, with PUNCH Metro having previously reported the death of Ayomiposi Ojajuni in December 2025.

Ojajuni, a graduate of Olabisi Onabanjo University, had allegedly taken his own life after being barred from writing the Bar Final examinations at the Yola campus in Adamawa State, having received a series of queries from the school authorities.
