Nigerian Footballer Ozor Fighting for Life in Hospital Following False Reports of Passing

Chinedu Ozor, a player for Katsina United, is currently being treated in the intensive care unit at Katsina General Hospital, following a dramatic turn of events after he collapsed during a pre-season match on Tuesday.

Ozor had been participating in Katsina United's match against Niger Tornadoes at the Gusau/Ahlan Pre-season Cup in Katsina when he suddenly slumped, prompting his immediate transportation to a nearby hospital where he was initially pronounced dead.

However, after the club transported his body to Katsina General Hospital, medical personnel detected movement, leading to his subsequent transfer to the intensive care unit for further treatment.

Katsina United's media officer, Nasir Gide, has confirmed the latest developments in Ozor's condition, stating that the player was initially confirmed dead by a doctor at a nearby hospital after the club rushed him there.

Gide elaborated on the events, explaining that the club collected a police report and took Ozor's body to Katsina General Hospital, where he was also pronounced dead, but medical personnel later noticed movement in his body and transferred him back to the ICU.

The news of Ozor's initial death had prompted an outpouring of condolence messages from his former club, Kano Pillars, and other clubs, but the latest update has brought a glimmer of hope for the player's recovery.

Heartland, another of Ozor's former clubs, had reported on X that he had been moved from the mortuary to the hospital after showing signs of movement, with medics working to revive him as he received oxygen.

A Niger Tornadoes player who featured in the match against Ozor expressed his hope for the player's recovery, describing the incident as "heartbreaking" and wishing for a miracle.

Meanwhile, Barau FC, one of the participating clubs in the tournament, has withdrawn from the competition, citing the organisers' decision to continue with the tournament despite the incident.

The incident has once again raised concerns about the level of medical preparedness at football venues in Nigeria, coming exactly one year after the death of Shooting Stars assistant coach Akin Olowokere on August 11, 2025.

Olowokere had collapsed during a training session and was pronounced dead after being rushed to the hospital, in a tragic incident that highlighted the importance of medical preparedness in football.

A similar incident occurred in March 2020, when 23-year-old Nasarawa United defender Chineme Martins died after collapsing during a league match against Katsina United.

Following Martins' death, the Nigeria Football Federation had directed that all league venues must have the necessary medical equipment and personnel in place before matches could proceed, with match commissioners and host associations instructed to inspect and test medical facilities beforehand.
