Nigerian Football League: Remo and Pillars Secure Vital Wins in Battle Against Relegation

Remo Stars and Kano Pillars have significantly enhanced their chances of avoiding relegation in the Nigeria Premier Football League, thanks to crucial victories on matchday 31, with both teams delivering decisive performances on Sunday.

Their wins have eased concerns about being demoted, as they overcame tough opponents to claim vital points, with Remo Stars coming from behind to defeat Kwara United 3-1 in a tense encounter in Ikenne.

Kwara United initially took the lead in the 34th minute, courtesy of Ibrahim Yahaya's finish from Junior Aimufua's cutback, but Remo Stars swiftly responded with Ahmed Akinyele's equaliser just four minutes later to level the scores.

The visitors then had an opportunity to regain the lead before the break, but Ini Emmanuel Okon missed a penalty in added time of the first half, leaving the teams tied at the interval, which ultimately proved to be a turning point in the match.

Remo Stars took control in the second half, scoring two quick goals through Haruna Hadi in the 70th minute and Victor Mbaoma three minutes later, securing a comeback victory that lifted them from 19th to 18th on the table with 36 points.

This result, in turn, caused Kwara United to drop to the bottom of the standings, now with 33 points, while Remo Stars continue to fight for survival in the league.

In another significant result, Kano Pillars secured a 2-0 win over Enyimba, with Chiedozie Okorie opening the scoring in the 11th minute and Ahmed Musa doubling the advantage on the stroke of half-time to put the hosts firmly in control.

The victory moved Pillars up to 14th with 39 points, while Enyimba slipped to 16th, level on 36 points with Wikki Tourist, who occupy the final relegation spot in 17th, further complicating the relegation battle.

Elsewhere, Rangers extended their unbeaten run to eight matches with a 2-0 win over El-Kanemi Warriors, temporarily moving to the top of the table ahead of Rivers United's trip to Nasarawa United, thanks to goals from Daniel Itodo and Godwin Obaje.

Katsina United edged Shooting Stars 1-0, denting the visitors' continental ambitions, while Plateau United recorded a narrow 1-0 victory over Bayelsa United, courtesy of Farouk Umar's 50th-minute strike, in a tightly contested encounter.

In Owerri, Ikorodu City were held to a dramatic 2-2 draw by Kun Khalifat, conceding a stoppage-time equaliser despite taking the lead earlier in the game, with Joseph Arumala and Folarin Temitope scoring for Ikorodu City before Uchechukwu Onuoha struck deep into added time to rescue a point for the home side.

The result kept Ikorodu City in contention for a continental place despite dropping points, while Kun Khalifat earned a valuable draw in their own fight against relegation, as the battle for league positions continues.
