Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority set to launch luggage monitoring system using radio frequency identification at domestic airports

The Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority is set to unveil plans for implementing Radio Frequency Identification technology to monitor checked-in luggage for passengers at Nigerian airports, marking a significant development in the country's aviation sector.

Michael Achimugu, Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection at the NCAA, revealed this information in a statement posted on his official X account on Tuesday, outlining the authority's intentions to enhance baggage handling.

Achimugu disclosed that the NCAA had convened a meeting with domestic airlines, other aviation service providers, and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria in Lagos to finalize arrangements for migrating to RFID bag tagging, a crucial step towards improving passenger experience.

The introduction of RFID technology will enable passengers to track the location of their luggage in real-time, from check-in to arrival at their destination, thereby addressing issues of misrouted and short-landed bags.

According to Achimugu, the new system will not only improve baggage handling but also enhance the resolution of passengers' complaints, ultimately leading to greater passenger satisfaction.

Achimugu emphasized that although RFID technology is already in use globally, its implementation in Nigeria will be a first, and its successful execution will guarantee greater efficiency in baggage handling and complaints resolution.

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has given his approval for the review of the technology by relevant agencies, following which consultations were held to examine potential implementation challenges.

After careful consideration, a consensus was reached that the initiative should proceed, with Achimugu describing it as a significant step towards enhancing passenger experience in Nigeria's aviation sector.

Achimugu expressed his appreciation for the support of the Minister, the DGCA, and the MD FAAN, stating that their efforts will usher in a new era in civil aviation in Nigeria.
