Nigeria Sports Commission fulfills pledge to hand out 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations bonuses to national women's team

The Super Falcons, reigning African champions, have finally received the rewards promised by the Federal Government for their 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations triumph, with Chairman of the National Sports Commission, Shehu Dikko, presenting the rewards to the team in Rabat, Morocco, on Tuesday.

This presentation occurred just hours before Nigeria's opening Group C match against Malawi at the 2026 WAFCON, and it was attended by NFF General Secretary, Dr Mohammed Sanusi, and captain Rasheedat Ajibade, among others.

Photos shared by the Nigeria Football Federation showed Dikko alongside Dr Mohammed Sanusi and captain Rasheedat Ajibade, with the parcels presented to Ajibade and her teammates containing title documents for the houses promised to each player and their national honours certificates.

The Nigeria Football Federation confirmed the presentation, stating that "NSC Chairman Shehu Dikko and NFF GS Mohammed Sanusi on Tuesday presented the 2025 WAFCON triumph rewards promised by the FGN to the Super Falcons in Rabat, Morocco."

Nigeria secured a record-extending 10th WAFCON title after a dramatic comeback from two goals down to defeat hosts Morocco 3-2 in the final of the 2024 tournament, which was played last year.

Following this historic victory, President Bola Tinubu announced a reward package of $100,000 for each player, $50,000 for every member of the technical crew and backroom staff, a three-bedroom house for each team member, and the national honour of Officer of the Order of the Niger.

While the cash rewards were reportedly paid after administrative processes were completed, the presentation of the housing documents and national honours certificates had been delayed until the team's return to Morocco for this year's tournament.

According to Dikko, the presentation was intentionally scheduled to coincide with the squad's assembly for the title defence, with the goal of boosting the players' morale ahead of the 2026 WAFCON.

Dikko explained that "I am leaving Glasgow for Morocco this week to present keys to the houses, which His Excellency, President Bola Tinubu, promised the Super Falcons after they won the last edition of the WAFCON."

Dikko also stated that "Even their $100,000 has been paid into their various bank accounts" and that the presentation of the keys was delayed to allow the players to be together.

The decision to delay the presentation was made to ensure that the players would be together when receiving their rewards, which Dikko believed would boost their morale ahead of the 2026 WAFCON.

Dikko reaffirmed that the monetary rewards had already been paid into the players' respective bank accounts after all necessary administrative procedures were concluded.

The presentation comes as Nigeria begins the defence of their continental crown in Morocco, where they are chasing an unprecedented 11th WAFCON title.

After opening their Group C campaign against debutants Malawi on Tuesday, the Falcons will face Zambia before rounding off the group stage against Egypt.
