Nigeria Sees Significant Boost in Foreign Exchange Reserves, Surging from $3 Billion to $40 Billion, According to Cardoso

The Central Bank of Nigeria's Governor, Olayemi Cardoso, has revealed that the nation's net foreign exchange reserves have soared from roughly $3 billion to approximately $40 billion, signaling enhanced external liquidity and burgeoning investor confidence, since the inception of the current economic reforms.
nThis significant upswing in net reserves is a testament to the progress made in stabilizing the foreign exchange market, as noted by Cardoso during the BusinessDay CEO Forum in Lagos on Thursday.
nAs of Wednesday, Nigeria's gross external reserves had reached about $52 billion, marking a substantial increase, according to Cardoso.
nCardoso recalled that when the economic reforms began, the net exchange reserves stood at around $3 billion, a figure that was publicly disclosed by J.P. Morgan, triggering widespread panic in the system.
nThe recovery in net reserves, Cardoso explained, highlights the positive impact of the reforms aimed at restoring confidence in the economy and bolstering Nigeria's external position.
nHe encouraged business leaders to capitalize on the improved macroeconomic environment and position themselves for the next phase of economic growth, emphasizing that restoring stability is merely a stepping stone for attracting investment, stimulating growth, and fostering prosperity.
nCardoso's remarks come as Nigeria continues its efforts to rebuild external reserves and enhance liquidity in the foreign exchange market, following reforms designed to address long-standing distortions in the FX market.
nThe CBN governor expressed optimism that the progress achieved thus far would encourage businesses and investors to commit more capital to the Nigerian economy, driving growth and development.
nCardoso summed up his sentiments, stating that the hard-earned stability achieved so far presents opportunities for investment and growth, and he urged local CEOs to be an integral part of this emerging trend.
