Nigeria extends warm greetings to Ghana as it marks 69 years of self-rule

Nigeria has extended congratulations to Ghana on its 69th Independence Anniversary, underscoring the enduring diplomatic and cultural bonds that unite the two nations. In a statement released on Friday by the Ministry's spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa, Minister of Foreign Affairs Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar conveyed Nigeria's goodwill message to his Ghanaian counterpart, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, commemorating Ghana's independence from colonial rule on March 6, 1957. Tuggar characterized Ghana's independence as a landmark event that galvanized Africa's liberation movement, inspiring numerous countries, including Nigeria, to strive for sovereignty and self-determination. He stated, "The Federal Government of Nigeria is pleased to join the people of Ghana in commemorating this pivotal chapter in African history, while acknowledging Ghana's lasting contributions to democratic governance, regional integration, and peaceful development across the continent."

The minister highlighted the profound historical, cultural, and diplomatic ties that exist between Nigeria and Ghana, rooted in shared experiences and aspirations for peace, prosperity, and African unity. Both countries, he noted, have consistently been beacons of democratic progress and stability in West Africa, while collaborating closely to advance regional cooperation through organizations such as the Economic Community of West African States, the African Union, and the United Nations. Tuggar observed that the relationship between the two nations has been strengthened over time through high-level engagements and cooperation in key sectors, including trade and investment, education, energy, defence, migration management, and cultural exchange.

He also recognized the significant impact of the movement of people between both countries under regional free movement frameworks, which has bolstered economic and cultural relations and fortified people-to-people ties. The minister acknowledged Ghana's notable contributions to democratic governance and regional stability, citing collaborative efforts in peacekeeping operations, mediation initiatives, and conflict-prevention endeavors across West Africa. "As Ghana celebrates its independence this year under the theme 'Building Prosperity, Restoring Hope,' Nigeria applauds the resilience, creativity, and determination of the Ghanaian people in driving national development and fortifying democratic institutions," he said.
