Nigeria experienced two of the globe's most lethal terrorist assaults, according to a report

The 2026 Global Terrorism Index has identified two terrorist attacks in Nigeria as among the world's most lethal incidents, with one ranking as the 10th deadliest globally, an attack on Darajamal village in Borno State's Bama Local Government Area.

This incident, which occurred on September 5, 2025, resulted in the deaths of 58 villagers and five soldiers at the hands of gunmen who stormed the community.

According to reports, approximately 30 of the attackers were killed by the Nigerian Army in the aftermath of the incident, with no organization claiming responsibility for the assault, although local media sources have linked it to the Islamic State West Africa Province.

A second attack in Nigeria ranked 12th globally, occurring on May 15, 2025, when Boko Haram terrorists attacked the neighboring villages of Mallam Karamti and Kwatandashi in Borno State's Kukawa Local Government Area.

During this attack, approximately 100 civilians were rounded up and taken into the forest, with 57 bodies later recovered and 70 individuals still missing, according to local press reports, with media reports attributing the attack to Boko Haram's JAS faction.

The world's deadliest terrorist attack occurred in Burkina Faso on October 9, 2025, when assailants attacked a military position, resulting in the deaths of over 120 soldiers and 30 others reported missing, with Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimeen claiming responsibility.

The second deadliest incident also took place in Burkina Faso between April 1 and 3, 2025, with coordinated attacks on several villages in Sourou Province, resulting in the deaths of at least 100 people and the abduction of several others, with Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimeen suspected to be responsible.

Another attack in Burkina Faso ranked third globally, with assailants launching coordinated strikes on multiple locations, including a military camp, on May 11, 2025, resulting in the deaths of at least 100 people, with Jamaat Nusrat al-Islam wal Muslimeen claiming responsibility.

The fourth deadliest incident occurred in Niger Republic on June 20, 2025, when gunmen attacked villagers near a mosque, killing at least 71 people and injuring 20 others, with local media attributing the attack to the Islamic State–Sahel Province.

Terrorism deaths in 2025 were heavily concentrated in five countries—Burkina Faso, Pakistan, Nigeria, Niger, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo—which together accounted for 70 per cent of global fatalities.

While Burkina Faso recorded the largest drop in terrorism-related deaths, Nigeria experienced the biggest increase, with fatalities rising by 237 in 2025, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo also saw a sharp rise in deaths, largely driven by attacks by the Islamic State-affiliated Allied Democratic Forces.
