Nigeria and the US Strengthen Defense Partnership in Meeting Between Ribadu, Vance, and Rubio

Nigeria's National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, engaged in discussions with high-ranking United States government officials, focusing on counterterrorism, defence cooperation, and regional security, during a recent visit to the US.

From May 4 to 6, Ribadu undertook a three-day working visit to the US, meeting with notable figures, including Vice President J. D. Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who also serves as Acting National Security Adviser.

Additionally, Ribadu met with Undersecretary for Political Affairs Allison Hooker and Assistant Secretary of War Daniel Zimmerim during his visit, fostering dialogue on key security matters.

A statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, on Saturday, revealed that Ribadu conveyed the president's commitment to the bilateral relationship during his meetings with US officials.

Ribadu stressed the importance of sustained cooperation in addressing emerging security challenges in West Africa and the broader Sahel region, including terrorism, violent extremism, transnational organised crime, and cyber threats, as outlined in the statement.

The current state of Nigeria-US relations was reviewed by both sides, with discussions centring on strengthening collaboration in areas such as counterterrorism, intelligence sharing, defence cooperation, economic resilience, and democratic governance.

The statement further noted that the NSA reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to working with international partners to promote peace, stability, democratic governance, and economic development across Africa, highlighting the country's role as a regional leader.

Ribadu also underscored Nigeria's position as a frontline state in counterterrorism efforts across the Lake Chad Basin and West Africa, demonstrating the country's dedication to regional security.

During his meeting with Hooker at the State Department, Ribadu expressed gratitude for the US's continued support in security assistance, intelligence collaboration, defence capacity building, and counterterrorism operations.

Ribadu reaffirmed Nigeria's commitment to implementing the agreed roadmap under the Nigeria-US Joint Working Group, established to advance structured bilateral cooperation on strategic and security matters, and reviewed progress under the JWG framework.

Both sides explored practical measures to enhance the implementation of agreed initiatives, including intelligence sharing, military cooperation, counterterrorism support, border security, strategic communications, and capacity development for Nigerian security institutions.

The statement revealed that Ribadu briefed American officials on the administration's approach to national security, emphasising the whole-of-government approach, which combines kinetic and non-kinetic measures, including community engagement, economic development, deradicalisation initiatives, and regional partnerships.

US officials commended Nigeria's leadership role in regional peace and security, acknowledging the country's importance as a strategic partner in Africa, according to the statement.

The meetings concluded with a commitment from both countries to deepen bilateral engagement through sustained diplomatic dialogue and enhanced defence cooperation under the Joint Working Group framework.
