Ebelechukwu Nwachukwu, the incoming Chairman of the Nigerian Insurers Association, has revealed an ambitious plan to enhance industry compliance, address public trust deficits, and increase market penetration within the new regulatory framework. This comprehensive strategic blueprint is set to drive growth and development in the insurance sector.

n

Nwachukwu, who is also the managing director of Rex Insurance Limited, made this announcement during a pre-investiture press conference in Lagos on Tuesday, where she outlined her vision for the association.

n

Her formal inauguration as the 27th chairman of the association is scheduled to take place on Friday, 3 July 2026, a critical time for the industry as it nears the completion of the recapitalisation exercise mandated by the Nigeria Insurance Industry Reform Act 2025.

n

The Nigeria Insurance Industry Reform Act 2025 has introduced a modern structure built on Risk-Based Capital and enhanced Minimum Capital Requirements, marking a significant shift in the industry's landscape.

n

Nwachukwu acknowledged the challenges and opportunities presented by this new era, stating that the insurance sector is entering a transformative period that demands higher standards of governance, stronger capitalisation, improved consumer protection, and deeper market penetration.

n

She noted that the new legislation provides a historic opportunity for operators to rebuild trust, strengthen operational resilience, and reposition the insurance sector as a vital engine of economic stability.

n

To achieve this, Nwachukwu outlined a three-pronged agenda that prioritises cross-sectoral alliances as a key strategy for market expansion.

n

Her approach will focus on collaboration rather than competition, and on building bridges across the entire financial services landscape, as evident in her statement that "my chairmanship will be defined by collaboration, not competition; by deepening public understanding, not industry jargon; and by building bridges".

n

Nwachukwu explained that simply injecting capital will not be enough to address the country's low penetration rate, and that the NIA will actively pursue strategic partnerships with banks, fintechs, microfinance institutions, and retail platforms to distribute products through digital channels.

n

The selection of Nneka Onyeali-Ikpe, the Managing Director of Fidelity Bank Plc, as chairperson of the forthcoming investiture ceremony, was a deliberate choice aimed at promoting closer collaboration between the banking and insurance industries.

n

Nwachukwu's administration will focus on making insurance more accessible and understandable to the average Nigerian through simplified claims and clear policy language, addressing the trust deficits that exist due to a lack of understanding.

n

As she noted, "trust deficits exist largely because people do not understand what insurance truly offers, but when people understand insurance, they trust it, and when they trust it, they buy it".

n

Under her leadership, the association will work closely with regulatory authorities, providing technical inputs and highlighting implementation challenges, to ensure a healthy and competitive industry.

n

Nwachukwu reiterated her commitment to making the NIA a credible and constructive partner to regulators, advocating for policies that support the growth and development of the insurance sector.
