NERC inaugurates forum to align federal, state regulations

The Chairman of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, Musiliu Oseni, says electricity regulators would collaborate to prevent regulatory arbitrage in the power sector.

Oseni stated this on Wednesday at the inauguration of the Forum of Nigerian Electricity Regulators in Lagos. He said the forum was created to deepen coordination between federal and state electricity regulators and ensure coherent regulatory frameworks across the industry.

“Electricity is the oxygen for economic growth and prosperity. Unfortunately, our industry is fraught with varying challenges that require effective coordination and synergy among the captains of the industry. As regulators, we are often regarded as arbiters of the industry, but our mandate goes deeper—we are drivers of innovation, investment, and economic growth; guardians of consumer protection; and protectors of overriding public interests,” he said.

The NERC chairman noted that the new body would promote regulatory alignment and strengthen the sector’s institutional capacity.
