NCAA star Adebanjo eyes impact beyond basketball

Nigerian forward Blessing Adebanjo says she is focused on building a career that extends beyond the court as she continues her development at the University of Georgia, combining her basketball ambitions with a rapidly growing presence as a digital creator, PUNCH Sports Extra reports.

In a sporting landscape where modern athletes are increasingly defined by personality and cultural influence as much as performance, Adebanjo has emerged as part of a new generation shaping identities beyond competition.

With more than 1.3 million followers on TikTok, the Nigerian has established herself as both a collegiate athlete and a content creator, while maintaining that both roles are deeply connected rather than separate pursuits.

Adebanjo made clear that her ambitions extend beyond traditional expectations of an athlete, with a desire to build a broader and more impactful career while continuing to pursue basketball at a high level.

“I see myself becoming more than just an athlete, something bigger and more impactful,” she said in an interview with Nigerian basketball journalist Kenny Bamidele.

However, she ruled out abandoning the sport entirely, adding, “I wouldn’t say over. But I’m open to evolving and expanding into different things. I love basketball.”

While her online audience is largely drawn to her dance content, Adebanjo stressed that movement serves a deeper personal purpose beyond visibility, describing it as an emotional outlet that allows her to remain connected to herself amid the demands of sport and public attention.

“Dancing is how I express emotions I can’t always put into words. It helps me release stress and stay connected to myself,” she added.

“It started as fun, became an escape, and now it’s definitely part of who I am. People sometimes think they fully understand me from a few videos. But there’s always more depth than what’s online.”

“I’m a bit claustrophobic, especially in crowded places. I spend most of my time alone, indoors.”

Adebanjo, who previously featured for Deep Waters, MFM and First Bank in Nigeria before continuing her development in Japan and the NCAA, said in a previous interview that her connection to the country remains strong despite her career taking her abroad.

“Representing Nigeria would mean everything to me. It would be a dream come true, I carry Nigeria with me everywhere I go.”

The forward also noted that she has yet to receive any approach from the national team, but expressed her willingness to represent the country, emphasising that she remains prepared and open to an invitation.

Currently based in the United States, Adebanjo recently moved to University of Georgia after completing a season with the University of Arizona, where she showed promise despite limited minutes.
