LeBron James, the NBA's all-time leading scorer, is set to embark on an unprecedented 24th season, but in a shocking turn of events, it won't be with the Los Angeles Lakers, a move that sent shockwaves through the league on Tuesday as free agency commenced.

In a post on X, James expressed his gratitude, stating, "Truly an honor to wear the (purple and gold) while trying to continue the greatness and legacies that came before me," and added, "Hope I made a few proud during my stint," in response to a farewell message from Lakers co-owner Jeanie Buss.

Buss's social media post had confirmed earlier reports that the 41-year-old forward would be leaving the Lakers after an eight-year tenure, prompting her to acknowledge James as "one of the greatest athletes in history" in a statement on the Lakers' X account.

The Lakers' co-owner also reflected on James's accomplishments with the team, including the 2020 title won under challenging circumstances and the numerous records he broke while donning the purple and gold, expressing appreciation for his time with the team.

James initially joined the Lakers in 2018 and led them to their 17th title in 2020, a postseason played in the Covid "bubble," and his agent Rich Paul informed the Lakers of his decision to leave as a courtesy ahead of the free agency period.

The free agency period began at 6 p.m. Eastern time, with teams and players permitted to engage in discussions, although official signings cannot take place until July 6, and news of verbal agreements may emerge beforehand.

James, also known as "King James," became a free agent following the Lakers' second-round playoff exit, and despite his uncertain future, he has been linked to potential returns to Cleveland or Miami, both teams he previously led to championships.

Another possibility is a move to the Golden State Warriors, where he could join forces with his 2024 USA Olympic teammate Stephen Curry, with whom he faced off in four consecutive NBA Finals between 2015 and 2018.

According to ESPN, the Warriors are seeking to assemble a roster of veteran superstars and are also looking to acquire James's former Lakers teammate Anthony Davis in a trade with the Washington Wizards.

James's 23rd NBA campaign was marked by a rocky start due to sciatica, but he rebounded to deliver an impressive performance, shooting 51.5% from the field and averaging 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 7.2 assists in the regular season.
