NBA election: Female lawyer in early lead

A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mrs Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, tightened her grip on the Nigerian Bar Association presidential election on Saturday, widening her lead and moving closer to becoming the association’s first elected female president.

Badejo-Okusanya is contesting to succeed the incumbent NBA President, Afam Osigwe, SAN.

As of 9:00pm, figures monitored by Sunday PUNCH on the Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association election portal showed that Badejo-Okusanya had secured 10,554 votes, representing 46.16 per cent of the ballots counted.

Her closest challenger, Lateef Akangbe, SAN, polled 7,020 votes, while Aare Olumuyiwa Akinboro, SAN garnered 5,289 votes, representing 23.13 per cent.

The latest tally indicated that 22,863 votes had been counted, with Badejo-Okusanya opening a lead of more than 3,500 votes over Akangbe.

Earlier results released at 11:33am had shown Badejo-Okusanya leading with 4,860 votes (41.77 per cent), ahead of Akangbe, who polled 3,851 votes (33.10 per cent), while Akinboro had 2,924 votes (25.13 per cent).

The NBA, founded in 1933, is the umbrella body for legal practitioners in the country and has, for decades, been led exclusively by male presidents. A Badejo-Okusanya victory would mark a significant milestone in the association’s leadership history.
