Nasarawa gov inaugurates 5.2km bypass, other roads

Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, has inaugurated the newly completed 5.2-kilometre Akwanga-Jos bypass in the Akwanga Local Government Area of the state.

Sule also inaugurated one-kilometre roads each in Akwanga, Nasarawa-Eggon and Wamba LGAs constructed by their respective chairmen as part of activities lined up to mark the 30th anniversary of the state’s creation on October 1, 2026.

Speaking at the inauguration of the bypass in Akwanga LGA on Saturday, the governor described the 5.2km road as a strategic intervention to decongest Akwanga town and boost economic activities in the area.

He explained that the bypass had reduced travel time for those coming from Keffi or Gudi to Jos by more than 5km, curbed incessant accidents in the town, and extended the lifespan of township roads.

“This is more than a road. It is an economic corridor. For years, our people in Akwanga have suffered traffic gridlock and accidents because all vehicles going towards Jos must pass through the heart of the town.

“Today, we have provided an alternative route that will bring relief to our people and open up new areas for development,” Sule said, as he commended the contractor for delivering the project on schedule and within specifications.

He explained that the bypass was built to the same standard as the federal highway to withstand heavy-duty vehicles, and he promised to install solar street lights on the road to ensure the safety of motorists at night. The governor assured that his administration would sustain its drive on both urban and rural roads across the 13 LGAs of the state.

In their respective remarks, the chairmen, Sadiyanu Isa-Andaha (Akwanga), Ilita Aliyu (Nassarawa-Eggon) and Ezekiel Jaga (Wamba), appreciated the governor for granting autonomy to LGAs in the state.

They promised to execute more projects that would have a direct bearing on the lives of the people at the grassroots to complement the efforts of the state and federal governments.

Earlier, the Deputy Governor, Dr Emmanuel Akabe, noted that the anniversary will begin on Friday with Juma’at Prayers at the Old Secretariat Juma’at Mosque, followed by project inaugurations across the state, an interdenominational church service at St. William’s Cathedral Lafia, and visits to correctional facilities for prerogative of mercy, among others.

“There shall be an Inter-State Novelty Football Match (Plateau and Nasarawa), Plateau-Nasarawa @30 reunion, Award of Distinction and lastly, the Independence Day Celebration and 30th Anniversary of the Creation of Nasarawa State.”

The deputy governor added, “This celebration is about our people, our cultures and our common identity. It is about paying tribute to our founding fathers, former and serving governors, traditional institutions, women, youths, public servants and every citizen who has contributed to Nasarawa’s growth.”

Also speaking, Commissioner for Works, Housing and Transport, Yakuba Kwanta, said the bypass would stimulate new settlements and commercial activities along the corridor.

In his remarks, a top royal father in the area, who is also the Chun Mada, Samson Gamu-Yare, appreciated the governor for the intervention, noting that the bypass would end the nightmare motorists and residents face daily in Akwanga.

“Our town is a gateway to the North-East and Plateau. This bypass will save lives and bring more development closer to our people. We are grateful,” the royal father said.

Others present at the event were Senator Danladi Halilu-Envulanza, traditional rulers, Commissioners, leaders of the All Progressives Congress in the state and residents of the areas.
