Movement won't be limited while cleaning is taking place, says Wahab

Tokunbo Wahab, the Lagos State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, clarified that there are no restrictions on movement during the state's monthly environmental sanitation exercise.

This clarification came in response to a query from an X user, #Faveo Autos, who had inquired about the fine for moving during the exercise and alleged an arrest at the Ikeja Police Station.

Wahab stated that any arrest made based on movement during the exercise is unlawful and does not represent the state government's stance.

He reiterated that the monthly environmental sanitation exercise does not involve any restrictions on movement, emphasizing that such arrests do not align with the government's policies.

The commissioner explained that the exercise was reintroduced to promote a culture of environmental cleanliness across the state, with the initiative being supported by the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law, 2017.

According to Wahab, the law backing the exercise does not include any provisions for restricting movement during the sanitation period.

The government's primary focus, Wahab noted, is on encouraging residents to view environmental sanitation as a civic duty, rather than relying solely on enforcement measures.

He emphasized that the goal is to inspire Lagosians to take ownership of maintaining a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable environment, with environmental sanitation being a shared responsibility.
