Motorist detained in connection with fatal incident involving Nigerian expat who graduated in the United States

A fatal hit-and-run incident in the United States has led to the arrest of a driver by the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department, with the incident claiming the life of Nigerian graduate Oluwalayomi Fadero.

According to a report by local US media outlet WSMV4, the incident occurred on Friday, involving suspect Ray Eugene Padgett, who allegedly stole a vehicle and fled, prompting the owner to track it to a location.

Upon realizing he was being followed, Padgett reversed and rammed into a vehicle behind him, after which the police deployed a helicopter to monitor the situation, setting the stage for a high-stakes pursuit.

As Padgett attempted to escape, he reportedly rammed into an unmarked police vehicle, triggering a high-speed chase, with the police aiming to keep the truck in sight until it stopped and ground units could move in to take him into custody, according to MNPD Public Information Officer Don Aaron.

The pursuit, which lasted approximately five minutes, reached speeds of up to 80 miles per hour along Murfreesboro Pike toward the county line, ultimately ending around 2:30 p.m. when Padgett drove into oncoming traffic near the intersection of Murfreesboro Pike and Hickory Woods Drive.

Padgett crashed into a white sedan driven by 23-year-old Fadero, pushing the vehicle about 100 yards into a ditch, and Fadero was pronounced dead at the scene, marking a tragic end to the chaotic incident.

Padgett was subsequently arrested and taken to hospital, and he has been charged with criminal homicide, with authorities revealing that he was on parole at the time of the incident, which they believe was the starting point for the chain of events that led to Fadero's death.

Alumni and members of Fisk University, where Fadero graduated, have been mourning her death, with Fisk alumna Jessica Williams expressing her sadness, saying it's heartbreaking to know Fadero was near her home when the incident occurred.

Fadero's former professor, Janet Walsh, remembered her as kind and compassionate, highlighting her commitment to volunteer work and describing her as a shining example of global citizenship, whose small acts of kindness made the world a better place.

A makeshift memorial has been set up at the crash site along Murfreesboro Pike, and a GoFundMe account created to support Fadero's family with burial expenses has raised over $15,000 as of the time of filing this report.
