Mother of three battles breast cancer, seeks financial help

A Lagos-based mother of three, Odunola Adegoke, has appealed to well-meaning Nigerians for urgent financial assistance to undergo a life-saving breast cancer surgery.

The 37-year-old private school teacher was diagnosed with Invasive Ductal Carcinoma (SBR) in April 2024, shortly after she stopped breastfeeding her third child.

She noticed her breast had become hard, swollen and painful, prompting her hospital visit, where tests confirmed cancer.

“Normally, the breast is expected to return to its usual state after breastfeeding, but mine was swollen and hard. I felt lumps, which I initially thought were ordinary, but they turned out to be cancerous,” Adegoke recounted.

Since the diagnosis, she has undergone six chemotherapy sessions but was forced to halt treatment due to financial constraints.

Her condition worsened in 2025 when she returned to the hospital with severe pain, only to learn that the cancer had spread to her liver.

“By the time I got to the hospital, I was told that it had spread to my liver, which had enlarged. We had to borrow money to commence chemotherapy.

“We completed six sessions, but I could not continue due to financial challenges. We have spent over N3 million so far,” she said.

Adegoke’s doctors have advised that a mastectomy, a surgical removal of one or both breasts, is now the only option to save her life.

The surgery, along with post-operative chemotherapy, is estimated to cost about N6 million.

“For the surgery, I need about N6 million. We have already spent over N3 million and exhausted all our resources. I am begging well-meaning Nigerians to come to my aid and save my life. I have stopped working since last year October,” she pleaded.
