Monitor Oyo govt’s spending ahead of 2027 elections, AAC urges EFCC

The African Action Congress, Oyo State chapter, has petitioned the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission to monitor and scrutinise the expenditure of Oyo State Government funds ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party said its request was aimed at ensuring transparency and accountability in the management of public funds, stressing that it was not accusing the state government or any individual of committing a crime.

In a Monday statement signed by the Oyo State Chairman of the AAC, Kayode Babayomi, the party said it was concerned about the pattern of expenditure by the state government as the 2027 elections approach.

The party said, “Oyo State belongs to all of us. Its resources must serve the people.

n

“As we approach the 2027 general elections, the African Action Congress, Oyo State Chapter, has formally petitioned the EFCC to maintain vigilant monitoring and scrutiny of the pattern of expenditure of Oyo State Government funds during this electoral period.”

The AAC said its concern was that public funds should not be diverted for political or electioneering purposes.

“Our concern is simple: public funds must remain public.

“We are not asking anyone to be presumed guilty, nor are we making an accusation of a specific crime. We are demanding transparency, vigilance and accountability in the management of the resources entrusted to government.

“The people of Oyo State deserve to know how their resources are being spent.”

According to the petition, dated September 2026, the party’s concerns followed what it described as publicly observable developments, including expenditure allegedly associated with political conventions, the opening of a new campaign office in Abuja and other spending it said warranted closer scrutiny during the electoral cycle.

The petition, filed through the party’s solicitors, Damilare Adenola and Co. Law Practice, stated that the AAC was not alleging that any specific offence had been committed.

The party said the request was based on concerns that state resources could be diverted towards political and electioneering activities as the election period approaches.

It urged the EFCC to take note of the concerns raised, monitor the management and expenditure of public funds by the Oyo State Government during the 2027 election period and investigate any impropriety, diversion or misapplication of funds discovered in the course of such monitoring.

The AAC also asked the commission to take any further steps it considered necessary to safeguard Oyo State’s public funds and preserve public confidence in their administration.

The development comes as Governor Seyi Makinde, who is seeking the presidency under the platform of the Allied Peoples Movement, prepares for the 2027 election. Makinde was formally adopted as the APM’s presidential candidate in May.

The party said the petition was made “in good faith and solely in the public interest” to promote transparency and accountability in the management of public funds in the state.

It added that it would continue to demand answers on how the state’s resources were being spent.
