Monarch urges search for first glimpse of new moon to mark start of 1447AH

The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, who also serves as the President-General of the Nigeria Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, is calling on Muslims nationwide to be on the lookout for the new moon of Zulki’ida 1447AH.

This directive was outlined in a statement released by Sambo Junaidu, Chairman of the Advisory Committee on Religious Affairs, Sultanate Council, Sokoto, on Thursday.

According to the statement, the search for the new crescent is scheduled to take place on Friday, April 17, 2026, which corresponds to the 29th day of Shawwal 1447AH.

As instructed by the Sultan, Muslims across the country are expected to scan the horizon for the new moon of Zulki’ida on Friday, as announced by Junaidu.

Junaidu emphasized that individuals who successfully sight the crescent should promptly notify their nearest District or Village Head, who will then forward the information to the Sultan.

The statement underscored the significance of this exercise in determining the start of the new Islamic month, and encouraged Muslims to actively participate.

The statement also conveyed the importance of collective effort, noting that the cooperation of all Muslims in this matter is highly solicited.
