Military's Cyber Unit Introduces Guidelines to Educate Soldiers on Safe Online Practices

The Nigerian Army has commenced a three-day social media awareness campaign, set to run from March 24 to March 26, with the aim of bolstering cybersecurity consciousness and promoting responsible online engagement among its personnel.

This event, organised by the Nigerian Army Cyber Warfare Command, is taking place at the Lt.-Gen. T.A. Lagbaja Hall, Ribadu Cantonment, and is designed to equip personnel with the necessary knowledge and skills to navigate the complexities of the digital space.

Maj.-Gen. Abubakar Wase, the General Officer Commanding 1 Division, declared the campaign open, noting that social media has become a critical tool that influences public perception, security dynamics, and operational effectiveness, and that understanding its opportunities and risks is essential for military personnel.

Wase, who was represented by Col. Ikechukwu Akabike, the Deputy Chief of Staff, Administration, 1 Division, stressed that the campaign will address key topics including the impact of social media on security operations, digital footprint management, cybersecurity best practices, and the role of social media in national defence.

According to Wase, the Nigerian Army acknowledges that social media is a double-edged sword, offering opportunities for communication, engagement, and intelligence gathering, while also posing significant risks if not properly managed.

Wase urged participants to engage actively in the sessions, interact with experts, and leverage the platform to enhance their knowledge and professional competence, while commending the Nigerian Army Cyber Warfare Command for its proactive efforts in promoting responsible social media usage and strengthening cyber awareness.

The GOC emphasised the need for continuous learning and adaptation in response to evolving digital trends, noting that the knowledge gained would improve both individual performance and overall operational effectiveness, and expressed optimism that the campaign would contribute significantly to building a more informed, vigilant, and digitally resilient force.

The campaign, which features lectures and interactive sessions, is part of the Nigerian Army's ongoing efforts to integrate modern cyber strategies into its operations and enhance national security.
