Military upgrades 81 Battalion base and commanding officer's home in Oyo state

The Nigerian Army has undertaken a significant renovation and commissioning project, overhauling the headquarters of the 81 Battalion and the official residence of its Commanding Officer at Letmauck Cantonment, Mokola Barracks in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, as a means to enhance troop welfare and operational efficiency.

This effort is part of a broader initiative to provide a conducive working and living environment for personnel, as highlighted by the General Officer Commanding, 2 Division Nigerian Army, Major General Chinedu Nnebeife, during the commissioning ceremony on Wednesday.

According to Nnebeife, the projects underscore the Army's commitment to its personnel, aligning with the command philosophy of the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, and his "Soldiers First" policy, which prioritizes the welfare of troops and their families.

Nnebeife emphasized that quality infrastructure is crucial for boosting morale, productivity, and combat readiness among military personnel, serving as a vital component of the Army's operational effectiveness.

The GOC noted that the commissioned projects represent strategic investments in the battalion's operational effectiveness, combat readiness, and long-term efficiency, rather than merely being structural upgrades.

He explained that the renovated battalion headquarters will improve command and administrative operations, while the upgraded official residence will provide better comfort and welfare for the Commanding Officer and his family.

Nnebeife commended the Chief of Army Staff for sustaining welfare-focused interventions across Army formations and urged personnel to ensure proper maintenance of the facilities.

He also praised the outgoing Commanding Officer of the battalion, Lieutenant Colonel Emmanuel Agaku, for initiating and successfully completing the projects, describing him as a dedicated and professional officer.

Nnebeife encouraged other commanders to emulate Agaku's commitment to improving the welfare of personnel under their command, citing his exemplary leadership.

Earlier, Agaku stated that the renovation became necessary following an assessment of facilities within the barracks shortly after he assumed command on February 7, 2025, which revealed the need to rehabilitate key infrastructure.

Agaku emphasized that the project was driven by the Army's welfare philosophy, stressing that "a motivated soldier is a productive soldier," and that the renovation aimed to restore pride, boost morale, and create an atmosphere conducive to effective duty performance.

The battalion headquarters underwent extensive rehabilitation, including reroofing, electrical and plumbing upgrades, office reconfiguration, installation of modern fittings, tiling, painting, and environmental improvements, with work commencing on February 17, 2025, and completing on May 15, 2026.

Agaku expressed appreciation to the Chief of Army Staff, the GOC, officers, soldiers, civilian staff, and other stakeholders whose support ensured the successful completion of the projects.

Captain Femi Ajia, the project supervisor and Adjutant of 81 Battalion, noted that the renovation was executed through meticulous planning, close supervision, and adherence to quality standards, aiming to improve personnel welfare, strengthen administrative efficiency, and create a conducive environment for military operations.

Ajia stated that the successful completion of the projects reflects effective coordination, dedication of personnel, and prudent utilisation of available resources.

The renovated battalion headquarters now features 12 offices, a conference room, improved office spaces, furnished workstations, air conditioners, refrigerators, modern fittings, and a newly constructed car park, significantly enhancing the working environment.

Similarly, the Commanding Officer's residence was upgraded with enhanced security features, perimeter fencing, a gatehouse, paved driveways, a garage, guest facilities, bedrooms, a kitchen, dining area, balconies, and other modern amenities, providing a comfortable living space.

The commissioning event was attended by senior military officers, commanders of affiliated formations and units, personnel of 81 Battalion, family members, and other invited guests, marking a significant milestone in the battalion's history.
