The English Football League has initiated an investigation into claims that Southampton officials observed Middlesbrough's training session at Rockliffe Park on the preceding Thursday, prior to the semi-final's first leg.

An independent disciplinary committee hearing is anticipated to take place on or before Tuesday, 19 May, although Middlesbrough will not be permitted to participate in the proceedings.

In a statement released on Friday, Middlesbrough expressed that the alleged conduct compromises the integrity of the competition and fair play, asserting that only a sporting sanction would be a suitable response.

The club stated that the observation and recording of their training session ahead of a significant fixture undermines the heart of sporting integrity and fair competition, necessitating a sporting sanction to prevent Southampton from participating in the EFL Championship play-off final.

Middlesbrough also urged the English Football League to take decisive action, cautioning that a failure to impose a strong sanction could weaken the governing body's ability to deter similar behaviour in the future.

The club expressed hope that the English Football League would pursue a sanction to protect the game's integrity, safeguard member clubs, and deter attempts to gain an unfair advantage, as stated in their released statement.
