Middle East unrest: Tinubu cautions of rising prices, diminished consumer spending capacity

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his commitment to enhancing the administration's efforts to tackle insecurity across Nigeria, stressing that the safety and well-being of citizens remain a paramount concern.

In his assessment, the escalating Middle East crisis poses a significant threat, potentially reigniting inflationary pressures and severely eroding the purchasing power of Nigerians.

During an Eid-el-Fitr gathering at his Lagos residence, where he hosted Vice President Kashim Shettima and 23 state governors, Tinubu emphasized the need for collective action against criminality and highlighted ongoing international collaborations to bolster the country's security apparatus.

A statement issued on Sunday and signed by Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, revealed that Tinubu's recent engagements in the United Kingdom focused on securing modern security interventions.

Tinubu disclosed that discussions in the United Kingdom centered on equipment and support, and he has been in talks with French President Emmanuel Macron, who has agreed to collaborate with Nigeria on equipment and support.

President Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu returned to Nigeria on Friday after a three-day State Visit to the United Kingdom, where they were hosted by King Charles III and Queen Camilla and met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Reflecting on global developments, Tinubu cautioned that rising inflation driven by the Middle East crisis could have a detrimental impact on Nigerians' purchasing power, emphasizing the need to care for the vulnerable.

He urged governors to translate their ideas into policies that directly improve citizens' lives and to support federal efforts in tackling the "tyranny" of criminals, advising state executives to provide incentives to cushion the inflationary impact on energy and transportation.

Tinubu commended Vice President Shettima for visiting Borno State to offer condolences and reassured the people of stronger protection through the use of new technology.

Chairman of the Nigerian Governors Forum and Governor of Kwara State, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, congratulated Tinubu on his successful State Visit to the United Kingdom, describing it as "bold and significant" for Nigeria's international relations.

AbdulRazaq confirmed that discussions on state policing were ongoing and that the NGF would present proposals to the National Assembly, highlighting the forum's commitment to addressing the country's security challenges.

The meeting was attended by several governors, including Sen. Hope Uzodinma, Alex Otti, Umo Eno, Douye Diri, Hyacinth Alia, Bassey Otu, Sheriff Oborevwori, Francis Nwifuru, Monday Okpebholo, Peter Mbah, Mohammed Inuwa Yahaya, Umar Namadi, Abba Kabir Yusuf, Dikko Umaru Radda, Ahmed Usman Ododo, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Abdullahi Sule, Caleb Mufwang, Siminalayi Fubara, Agbu Keffas, Mai Mala Buni, and Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
