Mayweather-Pacquiao sequel put on hold with no new date set

Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao's highly anticipated rematch has been put on hold indefinitely, according to Pacquiao's team in the Philippines, who made the announcement on Friday.

This development came after ESPN reported that a planned exhibition featuring Mayweather in Greece was cancelled due to an injunction filed by an events company linked to the Pacquiao bout.

The two boxing legends, who drew 4.6 million pay-per-view buys in their 2015 match, have been at odds since Mayweather revealed that their rematch, announced by Netflix for September, would be an exhibition, a claim strongly disputed by Pacquiao.

Pacquiao's camp issued a statement on Friday, citing "a volatile mix of federal lawsuits, scheduling overbooks, and financial gridlock completely surrounding the Mayweather camp" as the reason for the postponement.

Events company CSI had sued Mayweather the previous week, seeking to recover at least $4.65 million, which the company claims it paid for exclusive rights to promote the Pacquiao rematch and an exhibition bout with Mike Tyson that failed to materialize.

According to Friday's statement, the earliest possible date for the Pacquiao-Mayweather fight would now be early 2027.

The Pacquiao team's statement also mentioned that if Mayweather and CSI were to settle their contract disputes out of court, promoters would immediately focus on rescheduling a postponed exhibition between Mayweather and Mike Tyson, with a tentative date set for September 12.

Floyd Mayweather, 49, had retired from boxing in 2017 with a perfect record of 50-0.

Mayweather was initially scheduled to fight an exhibition against Greek kickboxing star Mike Zambidis on Saturday at the Telekon Centre at the OAKA Olympic Complex in Athens.

The now-cancelled Pacquiao bout would have been a rematch of the top-grossing fight in boxing history.
